Classics for All, United Kingdom

A decade ago, classical subjects were taught in only 25% of UK state schools, compared with 75% of independent schools. Classics for All (CfA) was established as a UK charity in 2010 to counter this disparity, in order to raise the aspirations of state school pupils, widen their horizons and increase social mobility. With the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, CfA launched the Electra programme in 2017 in primary and secondary state schools over a three-year period to address the lack of relevant and accessible resources available for young beginners. Through the programme, two new courses were commissioned to support the teaching of Ancient Greek at Key Stage 2 – Mega Greek and Basil Batrakhos – and available materials for study at Key Stage 3 were improved, while free training was provided for over 40 teachers. As a result, Ancient Greek was introduced (as curriculum subject or extra-curricular club) in 27 secondary and 16 primary schools in England and Wales, allowing over 1,000 state school pupils, many in areas of high deprivation, access to Ancient Greek for the first time.
