Promoting volunteering and active citizenship in Greek schools, Desmos

I Care & Act is an educational programme implemented by Desmos non-profit organisation and the Lambrakis Foundation with the aim of promoting the values of volunteering, civic engagement and solidarity as a way of life in schools across Greece. Over 3,871 teachers and 51,632 students so far have participated in the programme, ultimately reaching out to 1,700 social partners, including local charities and grassroots volunteer initiatives, among others. Approved by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, the programme combines teaching in class with experiential learning and encourages children to identify a cause in their community and work to bring about positive change. Students’ projects vary from big-scale initiatives in their local communities (such as blood donations and collection drives) to environmental awareness campaigns, hands-on support of local NGOs, such as shelters, or engaging with the upkeep and creative re-envisioning of neglected local parks and public spaces.
