Montane Forest Project, Nigeria

Some of the most biologically diverse montane forests in the world are found in the mountains of Taraba State, Nigeria. The Nigerian Montane Forest Project (NMFP) is a small NGO dedicated to their conservation and sustainable management through inclusive education and research. Thanks to the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation the NMFP provides an opportunity for Nigerian and international PhD and MSc students to undertake research in montane forest ecology and conservation from a field base right on the edge of one of the most species-rich montane forests in Nigeria. The students are supported in their endeavours by 22 full-time staff from the local community, trained by the Project. Undergraduate students from local universities are routinely based with the Project during their six-month Industrial Training internships. Undergraduate field trips of literally hundreds of students from biology and geography classes from as far away as Lagos visit the field station annually, and the Project runs a very active conservation club for local schoolchildren.
