Richard Coker Foundation, Nigeria

The Richard Coker Foundation is a non-profit organisation with an aim to assist families living with sickle cell anaemia as well as support underprivileged children and young adults in urban areas. The RCF was founded in memory of Richard Coker in 2004 and has since worked continuously to raise awareness of sickle cell anaemia and funded research to eradicate the disease. In 2015, with the continued support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the RCF, chaired by Chief Julie Coker, ran three noteworthy campaigns. The I Care programme, attended by over 400 patients, was aimed to create awareness about sickle cell disease and also provided free blood screenings for people living in Lagos state. Together with the Nigerian Ministry of Health, RCF organized an event at Agidimgbi Grammar School, Ikeja, giving students the opportunity to learn about sickle cell anaemia. The RCF team hosted the Sickle Cell Club Ikorodu meeting at the General Hospital, Ikorodu, where food and sanitary packs were offered to around 100 people, mostly women and children with the condition.
