Environment & Conservation
The A.G. Leventis Foundation lays special emphasis on the financing of programmes concerning the protection of the environment. Thus, financial support has been provided to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for its project at the National Park of Dadia in Evros and to the “Forests of the Future programme”. The Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) has also been supported in its projects regarding the protection of Eleonora’s falcon (Falco Eleonorae), as well as for the building of the Society’s facilities in Antikythera. Furthermore, a worthwhile programme supported by the Foundation and undertaken by the Hellenic Ornithological Society is the “Protection of the Oak forest programme” in Aegialia (Achaia). The A.G. Leventis Foundation, after the wild-fires which stroke the region within the summer of 2006, sponsored the fencing works required for the protection of the oak forest which emerged naturally in Aegialia. Another product of the close collaboration among the Foundation and the HOS is the “Aegean programme”, by which important research results about the birdlife over the Aegean Sea are revealed.
In addition, another significant environmental programme regarding the Aegean Sea has been developed via the cooperation with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage. The programme refers in creating a developmental plan for the Aegean Sea Islands based in the protection of the landscape, the environment and the cultural heritage of the area.
The A.G. Leventis Foundation has also assisted organizations like Medasset and the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) in their informative and educational campaigns in schools and other institutions.
The Foundation has also financed the Ghana Wildlife Society in order to set up a library, which is named “A.G. Leventis”, as well as the Environmental Protection Centre of Okomu, an important Nigerian rainforest, in order to establish research and educational facilities inside the forest.
