Archaeology & religious heritage
A. G. Leventis Foundation has supported the restoration works of many ancient classic and Byzantine monuments.
The Foundation’s contribution was decisive in the restoration of the Ancient Forum and the Roman Odeon of Thessaloniki, in the restoration of a colonnade of “Basilica B” in Philippi (Kavala) as well as in the construction of a shelter to protect the mosaic floor of Paul’s Basilica on the same site was carried out with the Foundation’s support.
Importantly, the Foundation was also one of the sponsors of the construction and experimental travels of the “Kyrenia II” ship, an exact replica of the ancient ship of classical times “Kyrenia”.
At the archaeological site of ancient Olympia, the Foundation has financed the restoration of the column of the temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as of the shelter of Philippeion.
Considerable financial support has been provided to many different excavations in Cyprus, as in Maa-Palaiokastro, in Kalavasos – Tenda, in Kato Pafos and in the Acropolis of Kourion for the restoration of the Temple of Apollo Hylates.
The church of Peristerona in Cyprus, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos in Serres, the Paleomonastero (translation Old-Monastery) of Agia Lavra in Kalavryta (Achaia), Aghios Panteleimon church in Thessaloniki, Vatopedio Monastery on Mount Athos, Aghios Georghios the catholic church in Aigina, Metamorfosi Sotiros church in Alepochori Attica, St.Demetrius church in Boboshevo, St Stefan church in Nessebar, and the Ossuary of the Bachkovo Monastery, are some of the churches, the reparation and conservation of which have been subsidised by the Foundation.
It has also financed the restoration of the belfry and religious paintings of the Greek Orthodox Church of “San Giorgio” in Venice.
The A.G. Leventis Foundation, in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage (Elliniki Etairia gia tin Prostasia tis Fysis kai tis Politistikis Klironomias) has financed the restoration and conservation works of other significant religious monuments such as the 17th century Holy Monastery of “St. Lavrentios” in Pelion (Magnesia-Thessaly), the early 12th century Byzantine Temple of “St. John Eleimonos” in Ligourio (Argolis-Peloponnesus), the architectural study required for the restoration of the Byzantine Temples of “St. Nicolas” and “Kimiseos Theotokou”, both located in Oxilithos (Evoia), the Medieval era Holy Monastery of “Panagia Katakekrymeni” in Argos (Argolis-Peloponnesus), the conservation of the wall-paintings of the Holly Temples of “St Charalambos” and “St. Nicolaos” in Perama (Ioannina-Epirus).
The A.G. Leventis Foundation has provided its aid towards the Holy Monastery of Vatopedio in Holy Mount Athos, in various different projects such as the restoration of the Monastery’s Old Water-Mill, the formation of its external area in which significant species of local Flora and Fauna can be observed as well as kiosks, old irrigation devices, tunnels and other buildings.
In Bulgaria, substantial assistance has been given to the restoration of the Roman Odeon of ancient Philippoupolis in today’s Plovdiv and towards the ossuary of Bachkovo Monastery as well as many historical churches.
