Aphrodite: The Making of A Goddess exhibition, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

The Ashmolean Museum’s “Aphrodite : The Making of a Goddess” traces the 5,000-year journey of Aphrodite from ancient Cyprus to her transformation into the Roman Venus and her enduring influence on Western art, fashion and beauty. It brings together ancient sculpture, Renaissance masterpieces and contemporary works, including Botticelli’s Venus from the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, a Capitoline Venus from the Louvre and Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe Aphrodite dress for Beyoncé in 2023. Through these works, the exhibition explores how Aphrodite’s image has continually evolved, reflecting changing perceptions of the female body, femininity and aesthetic ideals.

Supported by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the exhibition is curated by Dr Anja Ulbrich and is open to the public between 8 October 2026 and 11 April 2027.
