A. G. Leventis Associate Professorship in Eastern Christianity, Faculty of Theology and Religion /Faculty of History, University of Oxford

The support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation enabled A. G. Leventis Associate Professor of Eastern Christianity Phil Booth to further expand the teaching of Eastern Christianity within Oxford’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, launching a new undergraduate course charting the formation of the Byzantine, Syriac, Coptic and Armenian churches in the c. 450 – c. 900 period. The position of A. G. Leventis Professor plays an important role in the teaching of Byzantine History, in particular through the highly successful master’s programme in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies. Furthermore, preparation of a scholarly volume on the eastern Christian communities in Egypt during the transition from Byzantine to Islamic rule is underway, in anticipation of a larger project extending the same lens to the entirety of the eastern Mediterranean across the early medieval period. Dr Booth is also Director of the Oxford Centre for Late Antiquity, which, hosted by the Oxford History Faculty, aims to foster dialogue between the over 60 senior scholars, large number of graduate students and broad range of specialisms and scholarly disciplines that study Late Antiquity.
